"Hi Savoyboy"
Welcome to the Site!!
Theres a Post simlilar to yours posted by Buddyboy i would say yours would be in the same League!
Have a Read.
I Would say yours would be a 8 bolt crank so you would need to use any trans or manual from about 55 to 60/61 or use a Adaptor to fit later Torqueflite or Drop your crank out & use a Later crank from the Poly 318 or even LA 273/318 as they are 6 bolt!
But others on here are more clued up on what Boxes or Trans fit early Poly Blocks than me!
But i would say your 277 poly is from the same line as the Later 318 polys..

It would be, but it has a different bolt and dowel pattern to the later engines as well as that 8-bolt crank flange...
Best option without adaptors is the 3-speed Torqueflite with the cast iron housing, as used on a large number of Mopars in the late fifties and up to the end of the '61 model year. You would also be looking to retain your transmission brake, I guess?

the car has a ford 8" w/a 300 ring and pinion in it so the transmission park brake really does not matter. the engine runs really good, it just does not seem to pull very well. the trans seems to work fine (no slipping). when i drive it i have to let off the gas to get it to upshift. the car has a 4bbl. on it so i was wondering if the throttle pressure is incorrect or maybe the rear gears are not matched up for the trans. thanks
i remembered that i have a service manual on the car. i looked at the rear gear spec and the car came with a 3.73. i think i might start with some lower rear gears and see if that helps the car
