Air Cleaner for 2x4's, Part Two.
« on: January 12, 2010, 10:10:27 PM »
Damon/other interested readers: I got an Edelbrock #4119 2x4 air cleaner. After examination of the kit I have a few questions;
1. Do I need to smooth/polish the insides of the aluminum body like I did the carb bodies, if so, top & bottom? See pictures, the insides of the aluminum top & bottom are pretty rough IMHO.
2. Do the braces they include with the kit ( see pictures) restrict air flow enough to need changing, if so what can I do to correct? The braces have to be bent in a "V" shape, inverted & then snapped into the air horn. A threaded rod now goes down thru the hole in the "V" & a washer & nut are installed. Then you have two screws front & rear that attach thru the bottom & secure the top & bottom of the cleaner!! Can I simplify all that by installing threaded rod in both carbs, carefully drilling two holes in the cleaner top then use nuts on the threaded rod like most other cleaners?
3. Would it benefit air flow to modify or eliminate the three tabs that help locate the air cleaners?
As usual thanks for your comments & advice.

The bottom is what I would be concerned with- 80-120 grit finish on the lid if anything, but on the base, definitely smooth and polish. If you can increase the entry radius, it is worth doing-the bigger the radius the better. No massive benefit to removing the tabs- the front one has no effect in this case, but if you want, shortening the rear tabs (secondary side to about half their stock height and thinning them a little will help, albeit just a little. The hold downs are a definite impediment. I like to build a flat "H" shaped ( approx 1/8" thick) plate to fit the 4 carb hold down studs in the center (front of rear carb, back of front carb)- weld a nut centered in that plate to recieve a 1/4" bolt and drill a hole through the center of the base. Feed the bolt thru the center and thread into the h plate nut-this way you retain the clean lid- the threaded rod idea you suggest will work, but if you go that route, I would go to the local fastener house or on line- get some stainless flat head socket screws ( they are shaped like a wood screw on top with a small allen socket- drill the lid and chamfer the holes and then the bolts will sit flush-I like bolts from the top-that way there is nothing that can loosen and fall in the engine...

In increasing the radius I will have to taper the air entry point. How close should the two bowls get to each other?

The stock spacing between the two bowls is 1.3" apart so I can't do much there. I could radius the front portion of the outboard (secondary) carb. base & the rear potion of the rear (primary) base, then blend in the sides & opposite ends. FWIW, the inside of the housing is 17"x9", center to center of the carbs is 6-7/16". This is also the largest one piece 2x4 air cleaner I could find. Suggestions?

If that's the case, just smooth and polish, don't worry about the radiaus. If there are inner protrusions on the lid, clean em up......then lesseeherrun....

What approx. percent of CFM flow is lost by using the 3/4" wide hold down plate? I've got a buddy I'm trying to convince to ditch the plates.

Don't know where to start with that- it would depend on any number of factors-air cleaner radius /height, carb entry shape and size, height of bar above venturi, etc. Suffice it to say there is a loss, but more importantly it wreaks havoc on the airflow just before the venturi- that can mess with fuel curve, etc. All of this is relative- with the work you have done on the carbs, it will make more difference.

Thanks Damon. I have NO PLANS to run thst type plate. My friend has the Edelbrock 2x4 kit in a '60 Chevy Impala, nice street car. I'm trying to convince him not to run the plates but to make the H bracket you suggested.
