post from mopar stlye that we talked about
« on: December 21, 2009, 01:47:49 PM »
The 383 that my friend has running 47 degrees total advance. I talked with him today and he said the motor is out of his car. Hes getting ready to freshen up. I told him to wait til i got home that i have a project for him. He has agreed to let me drop the motor in my dragster, to figure out his problems, then take it back out. I can do that and it will give me time to save money for the cam and stuff that i need to get from you for the 500 inch. Do you think you could help me out with this project? thanks Kevin
when the pistons were notched: Trw Domes for the Indy EZ heads.
Found out that the od is .005 bigger than the 2.190 intake valves, the OD is .005 bigger than the 1.810 exhaust valve (cutter was changed ,I looked at it with bore scope). they just moved over to the center of exhaust valve notch and went down. The depth of cut was made .020 deeper than the original notch depth. The flat part of the piston is at Zero depth in the hole. I am putting this stuff on here as a reminder to myself as i go along, i tend to forget sometimes. plus it's on here for you also
Carb: 750 Holley DP im thinking 80 square. Should i use any power valves?
cam : 302 311 274 282@50 590 609 108 power range 4500 to 7200 rpm solid lift cam.
I plan to install it at 4 degrees advanced.
What Octane fuel should i run? 93, 100, 110?
Torque converter: PTC 8 inch 5700 should be loose, coming in 12/23/09

Kevin,
It would be better to add new posts so we can keep track of changes. Not knowing exactly what compression you have, I would estimate 104-106 would be the best octane. That said I would start with 108 or 110, get it sorted out a little and then start coming down if the timing shows a need for it. No power valves, but I would go 80 Pri / 82 Sec to start. It may run rich there, but I would rather start rich and not burn pistons. 4 Deg advance is fine.

It can get complicated a bit and we will work thru it when you get that far, but in general , if a mopar BB needs more than 42 -43 degrees of timing (in other words the car speeds up by going further), you usually need less timing and octane to get optimum times- we start at 36 degrees or so, go up a couple and make a pass- if faster, keep going up a couple until it slows down- that is the optimum timing with that fuel and that engine- sometimes you have to retard from 36 ( car slows down at 38) . Generally, somewhere between 32 and 36 is where most work best. If you have excessive timing, it's an indication the fuel is too slow (high octane) , retarded a ridiculous amount (ie 26 degrees) means too low an octane or too fast a burn.

Will soon be checking cam and getting it lined up, waiting on a few parts to come in. One question about the 383, what do you think the max RPM is i should turn this thing? Its got stock crank and rods, with new ARP rod bolts. I dont want to kill this thing first time out. Reason im asking is that im setting up shift points, burnout times, rpm modules in the three step, delay box etc. What are your thoughts on the stroker kits from Indy? Had any problems out of them before or are they up to snuff ? I'm just wondering because that's whats in the 440.

I don't know if anything is truly safe LOL....I have turned 383 engines like that well over 7500 with no problem, but 6800 is probably a reasonable limit. The Indy stroker kits are fine

Tried sitting the engine down in the dragster before we took the iron heads off. problem #1 , big deep moroso pan wont work, to close to the ground. just a tad bit under .500 thou clearance. I figure if the car bounces it will hit the track.Getting new one made at moroso with kick outs like a chevy pan ( gotta do what ya gotta do ). At least i will have one already for the 440. Can you email me the price for roller cam, lifters and springs for the 500 stroker engine? thanks

Oil pan is on and i set the engine back in car . Clearance is better but i will have to be careful driving on any uneven surfaces. Plan on pulling it out after new years party(lol) and starting to get the cam degreed in. what numbers for lift etc were you thinking of for that roller cam in the 500 stroker? just curious.
