318 poly block to tranny
« on: December 14, 2008, 02:02:01 PM »
This is my first post so please bare with me. I recently purchased a 1959 318 poly engine with the pushbutton torqueflite transmission. I do not want to use the torqueflite. I have a three speed manual tranny that came out of a 1957 plymouth with a 230 flathead motor. My question is, will the 318 and 3 speed stick work together? Will they bolt right up or will i have to find another transmission? I am doing a poor mans resto on the 318 and need info on good places to purchase gasket sets, rings, rods ect...

You can buy all the stock 318 Poly parts you need at NAPA: www.napaonline.com
And if your 318 Poly is pre-1962, the bellhousing is like the 392 Hemi. If it'll fit a 392 Hemi, it'll fit your early 318 Poly... if you want to use LA 318 transmissions, a '62 - '66 block is the one you want (and you'll have to use the matching crank, or one from an LA motor). But the early 318s are stuck with the early transmissions... well, unless you use an adapter or something like these: www.wilcp.com

My engine is the early pre 1962 318. So in other words, my engine and bellhouising will bolt up to the 57 plymouth 3 speed stick?

The flat 6 bellhousing does not generally fit the v-8. There is an exception around 59-60. Look for a v8 bellhousing for the v-8 engine and both must be pre 62. The flywheel will interchange.

I know it says it's for early Hemi, but it should work.

I know I'm coming in late here, but I've been limited in internet access for a couple of months...
I gather that the 1960 model bellhousings and so on interchange between the flatheads and the V8s. I've seen a few posts to that effect on the Forward Look forum... from Kenny J if memory serves.

Just wondering what became of this question. As Ray notes, there is a bell used around 59-60 that has both patterns but not enough of them to go around...would be nice to see a pic of the 57 housing for comparison.
